My Brandon

There's nothing like a new baby to ooh and ah over.  Brandon is a total sweetheart, and overall, is being pretty nice to me.  He has his days and nights figured out, is nursing well, and has the sweetest face.  He makes me so happy.  I just want to hold him tight all the time.  Whenever I see people looking at him, I pridefully remember that he is MINE!  I feel so lucky to be his mom.

Bronwyn and Magdalen really love their little brother, and fight over him constantly.  They are a little too confident with him, which can make me nervous when Bronwyn thinks she can walk around the house holding him.  But I love the nurturing side it brings out in them.

Ty continues to wreak havoc constantly.  But he sure does look cute napping with Brandon.  Too bad it was 6 pm and made bedtime a complete disaster!

Todd was totally spoiled on Father's Day, and got to take all 3 big kids to church by himself!  How will I ever come up with a gift next year that tops that one?!

Doing this post is reminding me that Brandon has only been bathed once since coming home....
Don't judge.

Seriously, could he be any cuter?
I love him!

So far, this is the only picture of all 6 of us.  We are such a big, mormon family, lol!

My mom spent the week with us, which means I got a nap and a shower every day.  :)  The kids love whenever she comes to town.  We all had a blast together, and the days went by too quickly.  (She did so many fun activities with the big kids, but I don't have pictures of them because I was home napping when they occurred.)   I even felt human most of the time she was here, and right before she left I started feeling like I could handle 4 kids on my own.  Then I remembered that this coming week I will have to cook and run errands, and suddenly I don't feel quite so competent...

Brandon is named after the street I grew up on, and my sister surprised me with this awesome onesie with a picture of our street sign on it!  I totally cried.  Best. Gift. Ever.

Wish me luck, I'm on my own now!

Falling in Love...

Little Brandon has been here for a week, and we are all just falling in love with him!  My mom buzzed up for about 30 hours to see him, and get my house in order for me.  What a lifesaver!  Can't wait til she is back next week!

Todd's mom has been helping a ton with playdates for the other kids.  What would I do without grandmas?  We are also being spoiled rotten with dinners and playdates from friends!

Our kids are definitely fighting for attention from us, and fighting over Brandon!  They all love to hold him, kiss him, and comb his hair.  It is so sweet.  Bronwyn is a total natural with babies.

Look at that face!  I just love it!  He is definitely a  Bigelow, but doesn't seem to be quite as much of a carbon copy as our other kids are.  :)

So far, he is a total angel.  Somehow he can sleep through the chaos of our household.  He looks like a porcelain doll. He is perfection all around.

It's very possible that I am the luckiest mom in the world.
All four of these are MINE!  (OK, and Todd's)

My three guys.

First week down and no casualties.  We are going to make it after all.

Birth Story: Yes, I am a granola....

Thursday morning I went to my weekly appointment with my midwife, and was dilated 6 cm and 90% effaced.  That's exactly what I was when I went to an appointment when I was pregnant with Ty.  We broke the water later that day and he was born after only 80 minutes of labor.  My midwife said we could break the water again...  I knew it would be offered to me.  I had the kids bags all packed for a sleep over at Grandma's, and had everything ready for my hospital stay as well.  But I just couldn't do it.  I really wanted to go home and take a nap instead!

So I went home and spent the ENTIRE afternoon on the couch.

That evening Todd and I went to dinner alone.  It was so nice.  (We also walked around the site of where the company he works for is moving.  Exciting!)  I was having strong contractions, but kept telling myself there was no way I was in labor.  How could I turn down breaking the water to go into labor on my own the same day?  :)  I went to bed early-ish, and woke up every hour or two with contractions.  That was pretty normal for me, but at 5:30 am I noticed some bloody show.  So I quickly started getting ready.  I knew that once it really hit there wouldn't be time for anything else.  I tried to eat, but could only stomach a few slices of watermelon.  I was soooo hungry!

The girls were educated and given the choice to attend the birth.  And even with all the honest details, they both really wanted to be there, and I wanted them there as well.  But I was torn about waking them up in the night.  Since it was almost morning I walked in and gave them the choice.  They both jumped out of bed, very excited to be meeting their brother soon.  They kept asking me to get them their breakfast, and I kept saying, "I'm in labor, ask your dad".  :)

We got to the hospital around 6:30 am.  Contractions were strong, but I was actually pretty impressed with how well I was coping with them.  I kept waiting for it to get so intense that I would go into labor brain, but they never did.  Todd did a great job of talking me through each contraction.  I now call him a dude-la!  He was amazing and a great support to me.  I could not have done it without him.  He always said just the right thing, and every contraction was totally tolerable.

The girls were great.  I think I only had to ask them to be quiet one time.  They sat together and watched patiently.  They smiled at me and kissed my cheeks in between contractions.  I loved having them with me.

My friend, Emily, was also there as my doula/friend/sister.  She and Todd took turns with the rolling pin.  It's an empty, plastic, rolling pin that we filled with ice water.  It feels HEAVENLY during contractions.  I had it rolled up and down my low back during every contraction until I started really pushing.

I of course had my music going, and really loved listening to it.  My favorite was Chris Botti.  He plays the trumpet, and I had my favorite song of his on repeat for most of the labor.  The trumpet reminds me of Todd, and always helps me relax.  The rolling pin, music, and words of encouragement were the perfect combination of helping me cope.  I also breathed deeply, and vocalized during the most intense parts.

I also had a friend of mine as my nurse!  Amber and I met at a Lamaze training several years ago.  It was fun to have her be our nurse for our two days there.  I'm dilated to about 8 in this picture and am getting my heplock.  How the heck am I smiling?!  I seriously never "lost it" like I usually do.  Which probably made me a really annoying patient because I wanted exact details and information about everything that was going on.

My "plan" was to deliver the baby on my side, like I did with Ty. That way I could still interact with the girls, and the position is a little less revealing.  It's also a good position for not tearing, which is always a goal of mine.  A goal I have never reached.  But the urge to push wasn't coming naturally, and after a handful of contractions, we could tell that this baby was not going to be born in this position.

I have always been interested in delivering on my hands and knees.  It's a great position for not tearing, and I've seen several women deliver that way.  I have never been able to bring myself to do it in that position because I just didn't want my butt up in the air.  :)  And once we decided to have the girls at the birth, I really didn't want to deliver that way.  But guess what, that's exactly what I did!  (Sorry, not even I am granola enough to post a picture of that!  LOL!)

Pushing was still difficult.  The urge never really came, and I am used to my babies just falling out.  So it was very strange to push for several contractions and STILL have the baby inside!  I kept asking what station he was at.  I needed reassurance that he was actually on his way out.  He was by far my hardest to push out.  But I was able to follow the instructions of my midwife to push at certain times, and hold back at certain times.

And it totally paid off!

Even though this little guy was HUGE by our standards, I didn't tear!  And what a difference I feel without stitches.  I feel human, which isn't typical for me after giving birth!

Brandon Todd Bigelow.
Born June 8th, 2012, 8:53 am.
8 pounds, 11 ounces
(That's a two month old at our house!)

Our midwife wasn't on call, but we had a great experience with Charlotte.  She was laid back when she needed to be, and trusted my body and my instincts.  Then she stepped up and led the way when I needed that.  It really was a perfect birth!

The feeling in the room when  a baby is born is amazing.  I really wanted the girls to experience it.  And having them there made it even more meaningful to me.  I loved seeing their eyes light up as they looked at their brother for the first time.  It made me miss Ty alot too.  We didn't get a picture of it, but the girls cut the umbilical cord!  They were so excited to do it during the pregnancy, but I wasn't sure they would really want to go through with it.  But turns out my granola genes have been passed down to them!  They were standing right by the midwife and she explained the veins and arteries to them, and they just soaked it all in, lol!

Todd's mom was also there to offer support, take pictures, and help with the girls.  We love having her at our births.  She also has been watching our other 3 kids all weekend!

Look at those cheeks!  Can't believe I pushed that fatty out of me!

I couldn't wait to see Ty with Brandon for the first time.  He ran into our room and yelled "where's my baby?!"  He was thrilled to hold the baby, and got mad when anyone else held him!  Sweetest thing EVER!

We only spent one night at the hospital.  Here Brandon is in his car seat for the first time.  They always look so tiny in there!  I was worried his little newborn outfit wouldn't fit, but it fit perfectly.  :)  He looked so cute all dressed up.

We quickly found our spot in the recliner, and have spent most of our time there since coming home yesterday.  This little guy can scream, and will do so, unless he is being held.  So that is what I did all night.  Just held him.  :)

I came home to a sparkling clean kitchen, and a jar of placenta capsules.  My friends, Carina and Gretchen, dried my placenta and crushed it into capsules.  Most mammals eat their placenta, and most humans did until the industrial revolution.  The benefits are balancing out mom's hormones and energy levels quicker, and increasing milk supply.  So yes, I am granola enough to eat my own placenta.  :)  And desperate enough to survive with 4 kids all summer and little sleep.  I'll try anything!

So there you have it.  A natural birth, with children watching, with my butt up in the air, and placenta capsules.  I am pretty hard core.  Couldn't be happier with how it all turned out.

I keep thinking I am in early labor, and figured that sooner or later I really will be, so I had better update my blog!  Here is our last month...

I had the BEST mother's day EVER!  Please tell me you saw the video Todd made for me.  It's on Facebook.  I used to know how to embed them into my blog, but can't figure it out...

Anyways, I had breakfast in bed, homemade bracelets from the girls (and Grandma), cute cards from school, and of course my amazing video from Todd.

We have been having fun swimming with our cousins!

Magdalen had her music program, and Kindergarten graduation.  She was darling in both of them, and announced that she wants to be an archaeologist when she grows up.  :)

Ty has been super needy, and hates to sleep without calling us into his room all night.  It has been tiring.  Hoping this little guy doesn't take it too hard when his little brother steals the spotlight.

We had a horrible wind storm several nights ago.  I have been patiently waiting for my flowers to bloom in the front yard, and they bloomed about a day before the wind blew them over!  We are now enjoying one of the most beautiful bouquets ever though.  And who knows, this might be my final pregnancy pic!

#2 Brandon Drive

Some people think it's weird that I spent my entire life from age 5 til the day I got married in the same house.

Our address was #2 Brandon Drive.

Man, I loved that place.
I haven't spent a night there in almost 11 years.  That's a third of my life!  Yet, it is still one of the most important places in the world to me.

Several months ago when Todd and I found out we were expecting a boy, we had the HARDEST time naming this kid!  We have always used family names.  Our biggest obstacle was that we used our top two male names on our first son.  Oops.  Weren't really planning on a #2.  Then Bronwyn told us she wanted us to find another "B" name, since she is the only "B" in the family.  I thought that was soooo sweet.

So one night when I was visiting my mom, my little step brother got out a baby name book, and started reading from the B's.  When he said "Brandon" I immediately thought of my old address, and quickly loved the idea of naming my son that.  Todd had it in his list of top 5 names, but we eventually narrowed down our name search to "Thomas" and "William".

(Side story:  I also had the joy of showing my 15 year old step brother what maternity pants look like.  He got a real kick out of that!  It was hilarious!)

The night came when I told Todd we absolutely had to name this baby.  Afterall, we had known for a whopping two weeks that this child was a boy!  That was when I realized how much I really wanted to name him "Brandon".  Todd could see that it meant alot to me, so he decided to make all my dreams come true.  :)  (For the millionth time)

So here I am, 33 weeks pregnant with Brandon Todd Bigelow.
It is hard to believe that we are down to the last weeks of this pregnancy.  I am definitely ready to be done!  Physically, I have felt horrible for the vast majority of it.  And even though I know I won't feel really great for quite some time, being done with the pregnancy is the first big step in getting back to normal.  When I was pregnant with Ty, and thinking that he was my last child, I had many feelings of sadness.  It was hard to accept that I would never carry a child inside me again.

I have not felt that way at all this time!

I feel ready to leave this chapter of my life behind.  I will spend the next month enjoying feeling a baby inside of me for the last time.  I will enjoy the last time in my life when people think my belly is cute (and emotionally prepare for how awful my belly will look afterwards!).  I look forward to spending the summer laying around and nursing my new little guy.  But what I really look forward to is feeling good again.  Having energy.  Sleeping well.  Not throwing up.  And being able to keep up with my family.  I look forward to watching my kids love on their little brother, and feel the spirit that he will bring into our home.  I can't wait to see my husband napping on the couch with his newest son.  Is there anything sweeter than loving dad holding his newborn?

So I will push through this last month, knowing the best is yet to come.  Our family will be complete, and someday (hopefully sooner rather than later) I will feel well again!

(Slightly returning to the #2 Brandon Dr. theme....)

Last weekend my mom and I judged the Sugar Salem Jr. Miss program.  It was so fun to be HOME!  So many memories of my Jr. Miss past.  So wonderful to see old friends.  The ultimate luxury to spend two nights in a hotel with my hubby and no kids!  I have a feeling it will be a loooong time til we have another chance to relax!
